Tsukigase Bairin

Last modified date

Tsukigase Bairin ravine is one of the top three beautiful Ume blossom sites in Nara. More than ten thousand Ume trees are planted along the ravine.

Ume (Japanese plum) blossom brings the fragrance of spring. The smell is somewhat similar to Jasmine, Gardenia, or Ylang-Ylang.

In the ancient Nara period, Ume blossom was more popular than Cherry blossom.

The Ume fruit is also ubiquitous in Japanese daily life.

We use it to make Ume-shu liquor, Ume-boshi (salted pickled ume fruit), Ume syrup and Ume jam.

In ancient times, the smoked fruit, “Ubai”, was used as a medicine and in traditional “safflower dyeing” of textiles.

You can visit the Onsen after walking around.

The region is also famous for fields of tea and cherry blossom.
