The Shuni-e ceremony in Yakushi-ji Temple,
commonly known as “Hanae-shiki”, is held from March 25th to 31st.
Ten kinds of imitation flower are dedicated
to Yakushi nyorai (the Healing Buddha).
The event originated to celebrate the recovery from illness of
the empress of Emperor Horikawa in the 9th Century.
The final, and wildest, part of this event is “Oni-oi-shiki”
(the ceremony to drive out ogres) on the night of March 31st.
It is a memorial service for making wishes,
but features “ogres” swinging large burning torches around,
and can be very dangerous. Please take care!
