In Buddhist culture, ‘Monju-bosatsu’ is a Bodhisattva that controls wisdom.

Monju-e is a festival to honour the Monju-bosatsu

enshrined in Tokon-do Hall at Kofuku-ji Temple.

A procession including many children dressed as Buddhist monks

or wearing gorgeous flower hats is followed by

an “orchestra” playing traditional gagaku music.

A Hogaku-guruma float covered with one section of a sutra made up of

Ichijigaki (one-character calligraphy written by primary school students)

is pulled by the procession from Jokyo-ji Temple to Kofuku-ji Temple.

Entry to Tokon-do Hall is free of charge on the day.
