Kenpyo-sai (Presenting of Ice) Festival at Himuro-jinja Shrine

“Himuro” means a storehouse for ice.

The deity of ice at Himuro-jinja shrine is worshipped especially by ice manufacturers.

Kenpyo-sai is held annually on May 1st.

Ice blocks 1m in height containing sea bream and carp, as well as several ice sculptures are presented and dedicated to the ice deity.

Gagaku (traditional court music) is played from 2pm,

and ice block lanterns are lit up from 5pm.
